Operator-Funded vs. Player-Funded Jackpots

When discussing jackpots at an operator level, it’s important to distinguish between operator-funded and player-funded jackpots.

Operator-funded jackpots are financed by the operator and players can win these by fulfilling a certain action related to the core product (e.g. casino, live casino). Usually the win chance is tied to a rule set by the operator, e.g. “every spin above 1 EUR can win the jackpot” or even more differentiated rule sets such as “every spin can win the Mini Jackpot, every spin above 0.5 EUR can win the Major Jackpot and every spin above 1 EUR can win the Mega Jackpot”. The operator defines the jackpot budget and this becomes a retention cost to the operator impacting the P&L further.

Generally speaking, players don’t have to make an additional payment to participate in these types of jackpots. No secondary transaction takes place.

In comparison, player-funded jackpots are characterised by a secondary transaction done by the players. Players are required to opt-in and select a jackpot bet size. Player-funded jackpots run on a predefined RTP and function as a monetization stream for the operator.

Due to the nature of the above, player-funded jackpots can only be powered by certified & B2B licensed entities as a dedicated jackpot bet is being accepted and resolved by the proprietary RNG of the jackpot system.
